Similar and Different

Things that look the same are called similar. Things that do not look the same are called different. When we compare two things, we look for their similarities and difference. Look at the examples below.

Observe the external features of the parrot and ostrich. What are the similarities between them? An ostrich and a parrot have similar external features. Both have wings, beaks and two legs. Their bodies are covered with feathers.

What are their differences then?

An ostrich and a parrot also have different external features. An ostrich has a long neck and two long legs. The beak of a parrot is short and hooked. An ostrich has a flat beak.

Different types of birds have different sizes and shapes of beaks.

Animals can be grouped according to their similarities. For example, animals with four legs can be grouped together.

What other animals can be grouped together with cats and dogs?

Similarly, animals with feathers can be grouped together too.

Peacock and duck are both birds. They have their bodies covered with feathers. They can be grouped according to their number of legs too, since they both have two legs. Can you name some other animals that can be grouped together?
